ORIGIN
Sugar apple is also called as Sweetsop. It is an edible fruit of Annona squamosa, a small, well-branched shrub native to the tropical regions of South America and West Indies. In the 16th century, it was introduced to India and the Philippines. Due to extensive cultivation and naturalization, its native place is unknown. It is naturalized in North to Southern Florida in the United States and South to Bahia in Brazil and in many parts of Asia. Sugar Apple is made up of a hard-green exterior which is non-edible and the main sweet and fleshy fruit is revealed upon cutting open the exterior. In India, it is called “Custard Apple”.
Grown in India: It is cultivated in Assam, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu. In Tamil, it is called as Seetha Pazham.
